Behind the Curtain

How Aladdin JR Helped CAC Elementary Students Shine

What started as a vision to stage Aladdin JR turned into a colorful, collaborative journey that brought out the best in CAC Elementary students. From singing and acting to stage management and set design, the show became a showcase for student growth, creativity, and community spirit.

A Fresh Take on a Familiar Tale

Rather than sticking strictly to the Disney version, the directing team, led by Mr. Franklin, reimagined Agrabah with a CAC twist. The plot and characters remained intact, but the design, performances, and staging were original. Every element, from the way the genie appeared to the bustling streets of Agrabah—was crafted with the school community in mind.

To accommodate the high level of interest; 81 students signed up to audition, the team expanded the cast from the original 18 roles to 59. This allowed more students to experience the magic of musical theater. Roles were multiplied, with characters like the Genie, Cave of Wonders, and palace guards shared among several performers.

A Casting Process Built on Growth

Music teacher Trestan Peck and choreographer Paula Cornejo worked closely with Mr. Franklin to design an audition process that assessed not only ability but potential. Over three days, students rotated through singing, dancing, and acting sessions. Songs like Proud of Your Boy, Friend Like Me, and These Palace Walls were chosen to reveal vocal range, emotional depth, and stage presence.

Some students nailed high notes or intricate footwork, while others impressed with their enthusiasm and growth mindset. The goal wasn’t to find perfection—it was to find possibility.

Rehearsals, Resilience, and Real-World Skills

Over three months of daily after-school rehearsals, students practiced lines, polished dance routines, and discovered the power of teamwork. They learned to adapt, support each other, and step into the spotlight with confidence.

And their commitment paid off. When the curtain rose, audiences saw more than just a school play, they saw young performers embodying characters with charm, confidence, and charisma.

Community Magic

The production involved over 100 people, including backstage crew, parents, and faculty. The entire CAC community rallied to bring Aladdin JR to life. Sets were painted, costumes stitched, and props built with incredible care. Even better, the students have been invited to perform again—this time at AUC Tahrir, where a new audience will get to witness their hard work and talent.

A Standing Ovation for Growth

For many of the young cast members, Aladdin JR was their first time on stage. They walked away not only with applause, but with new confidence, stronger friendships, and the knowledge that they’re capable of more than they imagined.
